Conservation, human rights and potential common ground: the rise of community-led conservation. Dr. Helen Newing

Location: Somerville College, Park 05 19:00

Over the past few years there has been increasing condemnation of militarized forms of parks and protected areas because of the widespread human rights abuses they cause. However, there is also increasing recognition of the huge contribution that indigenous peoples and local communities make to conservation worldwide. In this talk I will give examples of community-led conservation and the ways in which community initiatives are receiving recognition and support, and will then explore what this may mean for future paradigms in conservation.
