I am interested in the linkages between economic, ecological and political aspects of conservation of natural resources. I am particularly interested in the application of economic tools and understanding of ecological, political and economic aspects of conservation problems. These can help to identify the underlying causes and provide solutions for these critical issues. I am applying these kind of analyses to coral reef conservation and management issues, an area which I have been particularly interested in, and have had the fortune to work in, with various organisations and individuals over the last six years. My MSc thesis research quantified the total economic value of a coral reef to a local fishing community in Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Current research
I am investigating the economic impacts of marine reserves at local, national and international scales. Particular emphasis will be based on looking at the costs and benefits that are created for the diverse stakeholders. This enables incentives for and against conservation to be examined. This method will help to identify and address short-comings in the reserve management that will ultimately cause it to fail. It will also be used to develop novel ways to align conservation and community goals and incentives, which may include international funding mechanisms. I will also be investigating economic interactions between competing uses for multiple use reserves, especially where trade-offs and perhaps resulting conflicts are severe. I will ask; on what basis should management decisions be made? Should we seek to maximise financial value or human welfare? I will also be investigating biological, political and economic linkages that exist in conservation management. For example, I will investigate, if where different uses or programs are being instigated within a reserve, can ecological effects be seen?

Global Marine Manager Questionnaire

As part of my research, I am targeting marine managed area managers or researchers with a good working knowledge of a marine protected area with an area of coral reefs. I am hoping to increase understanding of MMA management by benefiting from manager experience. I am using a questionnaire to investigate costs and benefits generated by MMAs and how these are linked to conservation success. This will enable me to make recommendations, including identifying strategies for enabling more sustainable support for MMA management costs.

Brief CV

Present: PhD at Imperial College London

Research fellow for the Conservation Strategy Fund, USA and in country Principal Investigator for the “Marine Managed Area Economic Valuation” in Belize for Conservation International, as part of the global “Marine Managed Area Science Research Program”, a global initiative involving hundreds of researchers.

2005: Research and creation of a policy publication for the WorldFish Centre, exploring the feasibility and implications on increased market access of developing countries to global fish trade, for national economies and the resource base itself.

2004: Filming and producing conservation films, in collaboration with local environmental organisations targeted at local audiences in Indonesia and Kenya, for the Brock Initiative. Subjects include campaign films highlighting problems caused by foreign trawlers, environmentally friendly practises for local communities and more general education films about local ecosystems.

2003: MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial College London, specialising in environmental economics and politics. MSc thesis: Estimating the Total Economic Value of Coral Reefs for Residents of Sampela, a Bajau Community in Wakatobi Marine National, Sulawesi. A Case Study.

2003: Internship at the Ecologist magasine as a writer and researcher.

2003: Coral reef ecology researcher for the Aldabra Marine Program, using underwater transects as part of a project to assess coral reef recovery following effects of 1998 El Nino events.

2003: Internship at the BBC natural history unit.

2002: Field researcher for a PhD project assessing ontogentic migration patters in reef fish in the British Virgin Islands

1999-2002: BSc in Biological Sciences, Oxford University. Specialisation in zoology, animal behaviour, environmental science and conservation biology.

Previous: Coral cay conservation volunteer science officer and internship at Diversitas, an international biodiversity program, located in UNESCO headquarters, in Paris.
