We have just launched the new SCA website at www.saiga-conservation.com. Please have a look on this site for further information about saiga and the SCA's work. This SCA website at www.iccs.org.uk will remain here for the time being.
The Saiga Conservation Alliance was inaugurated in September 2006. In November 2006 we were granted Candidate Partner status by the Wildlife Conservation Network.
We are an informal network of researchers and
conservationists, who have worked together over 15 years to study and conserve
the saiga antelope, a unique nomadic species inhabiting the steppes and
semi-deserts of Central Asia and the pre-Caspian. We are committed to restoring
the saiga to its position as the lynchpin of the Central Asian and pre-Caspian
steppes, reflecting the species’ cultural and economic value to local
people and its fundamental role in the steppe ecosystem. We work
collaboratively, and freely share our expertise and love for saigas. We
disseminate our work widely, to the public throughout the world, governments
and the conservation community.

Saiga antelope conservation in Uzbekistan through awareness-raising and engagement of local communities
This project is carrying out public awareness activities among villagers on the Ustiurt plateau, including a children's art competition and handicrafts club, information signs, engagement with government and industry and the formation of "Saiga Friends" clubs. It is funded by the Wildlife Conservation Network and Fauna and Flora International.
Evaluating approaches to public engagement in saiga
conservation
This Darwin Initiative project builds on the success of our previous Darwin project (Using saiga
antelope conservation to improve rural livelihoods) by collaborating with
Kalmykian educationalists and religious leaders to highlight the importance of
saiga conservation. We are also sponsoring a cultural exchange between the UK
and Kalmykia, continuing to support direct action for saiga conservation, and
comparing attitudes to saiga conservation in areas which have had different
types of conservation intervention.
