Supporting the CMS in monitoring the MoU on saiga conservation
Project funded by the Convention on Migratory Species
July 2007-June 2009.
This project was joint between Imperial College London and the Saiga Conservation Alliance and led to the following outcomes:
a) Four issues of Saiga News in electronic and hard copy in at least two languages including an adaptation of the newsletter’s format to support the MoU’s implementation;
b) Increased information sharing amongst the competent authorities of the Range States, Mongolia and China tasked with Saiga conservation and sustainable use and the Saiga research and conservation community composed of individual scientists and interested organisations;
c) Increased regional and global profile of the Saiga MoU and enhanced awareness amongst all Range States, China, Mongolia, intergovernmental organisations such as CMS and CITES, major international/bilateral funding agencies, partner organisations and including experts supporting the implementation of the Saiga MoU;
d) Increased profile for CMS;
e) An easily accessible and regularly maintained database on Saiga-related conservation activities in the Range States, China and Mongolia which could be easily migrated by CMS to an on-line format; and
f) A roster list of experts involved in Saiga conservation established to provide an easily updatable resource-base to support the implementation of priority activities and participation in meetings.
We have a page dedicated to this project at the SCA website.
