Imperial College London Silwood Park Buckhurst Road Ascot Berkshire, SL5 7PY a.jabeen @ imperial.ac.uk Research interests Ethnobotany is a scientific field that explores the relationship between humans and the environment, in particular the plant environment. The information that local communities possess about their natural resources are related to on how plants are used, how plant resources are distributed across ecosystems, and the relationships between plants, people and animals. The main aim of my work is to better understand local knowledge systems related to the use of plants and to improve conserve the plant resources, with special emphasis on fodder management. A focus of my research is Ayubia National Park. Ayubia National Park is representative of Himalayan moist temperate forest. Problems related to conservation at Ayubia National Park are similar to those found elsewhere in the Himalayan mountains; degradation due to overgrazing by livestock, uncontrolled tourism, collection of non-timber forest produce, encroachment for human habitation and cultivation and human-wildlife conflicts. In addition, poaching also threatens many mountain ungulates. Inside protected areas such as at Ayubia National Park, the collection of fodder is seen by conservation agencies and the forest department as having a negative impact on biodiversity. Consequently there is a need for understanding the variety of modes of management of fodder within agricultural and wasteland areas, as well as in rangelands, in order to reduce the impact of foddr collection on biodiversity. Women in Ayubia National Park area are responsible for fodder collection and understanding their knowledge and practices related ...

Imperial College London Silwood Park Campus Buckhurst Road Ascot SL5 7PY g.wallace @ imperial.ac.uk Current research I am currently a researcher on the Valuing Nature Network (VNN) project, ‘Capturing differentiated experience of change to ensure pro-poor ecosystem service interventions are fit for purpose’. The project is an interdisciplinary assessment of interactions between ecosystem service interventions and individual wellbeing. Interventions to improve management of natural resources typically occur within dynamic ecological, social, and economic contexts, and the wellbeing of those most vulnerable to the impacts of change is often inadequately addressed. The project explores concepts and measurement of individual wellbeing while developing locally-appropriate tools to capture differentiated experience of change, aiming to integrate wellbeing into the wider research and policy agenda. My previous research has addressed human-wildlife interactions, monitoring techniques, and wildlife ecology. This has included methods to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, wildlife and human behaviour, analysis of the dynamics of crop-raiding, developing deterrents to raiding, participatory monitoring, fisheries issues, and assessing the impacts of conservation for local people. I am also interested in how local livelihoods may be enhanced through viable business ventures to support conservation.
Research Associate, Department of Ecology and Evolution, Imperial College London See Graham’s ICCS webpage here. My research and conservation experience has primarily explored human-wildlife interactions, monitoring and survey techniques, and wildlife ecology. Prior to joining the VNN project team I was working on an interdisciplinary study of indigenous livelihoods, artisanal fishing behaviour, fishery dynamics, and management options for wetland conservation in Madagascar. My PhD research in Uganda used systematic observational methods to understand the crop-raiding behaviour of wildlife, behaviour of farmers, and dynamics of raiding activity. Working in partnership with farmers, this information was then applied to develop affordable, locally appropriate, and effective deterrents to crop-raiding as well as techniques to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. Previous research included assessing the costs of conservation for local people, participatory approaches to monitoring, and the ecology of a wide range of terrestrial and marine species across many regions. I have had field roles with numerous conservation organisations, primarily in eastern and southern Africa. I also have a background in business and management, with a particular interest in how local livelihoods may be enhanced through viable business ventures to support conservation.

Research Fellow, ZSL Institute of Zoology See Marcus’ webpage here. With a background in behavioural and population ecology, I have used a range of approaches to investigate population processes, particularly the implications of individual behavioural decisions for population-level outcomes. My research includes building depletion models to predict the implications of foraging behaviour for movement patterns by geese, developing game-theoretic individual-based models to explore how dominance and competition impact foraging performance and distribution in geese and baboons, and using traditional population modelling tools to address applied questions such as population viability analyses for geese in Scotland. I am involved in theoretical and applied studies that use socio-economic methods to examine harvesting impacts on exploited species. I also work on interdisciplinary studies of bushmeat exploitation in West and Central Africa, building bioeconomic models to derive simple sustainability indicators for the field and explore the effectiveness of policy tools. My research currently focuses on problems of monitoring, understanding, and predicting changes in social-ecological systems, seeking to improve the evidence base for effective management of natural resources. This involves theoretical aspects of methodological development as well as interdisciplinary work with anthropologists and economists. My field research is primarily in Africa but also in Asia and the Americas. I also co-direct an MSc course in Conservation Science at Imperial College London.
