Research interests
My broad research interests are focused at understanding human-wildlife interactions and anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity change in order to minimize conflict and to support sustainable use of wildlife resources.
Current research
Working in the Serengeti, Tanzania, I will investigate the interactions between multiple components of local hunting. In outline, I will develop an operating model of bushmeat hunting, including management and biological dynamics, informed by social surveys of households to understand the decision-making process leading to participation in illegal hunting.
I will use this approach to predict the potential effects of changes in parameter values and management decisions on hunting behaviour, and hence on the abundance and distribution of bushmeat species. The model will be used to provide recommendations for the best way to provide incentives to law compliance and advise on the best management strategies to promote conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem services
This research is funded by the FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia and supervised by Prof E.J. Milner-Gulland and Dr Nils Bunnefeld.
